        Hi,

We want to develop a board based on OSD3358-SM-RED, which only has one Ethernet port. We know that AM3358 supports two Ethernet ports, so how to add one more Ethernet port to the board? Which chipset should we choose so that the pre-built image can support the chipset without installing additional driver? Is there any reference schematics for this dual Ethernet design?

Currently OSD3358-SM-RED uses one Atheros AR8035 for the Ethernet port. Should we add one more AR8035? Or is there any better way for the dual Ethernet design? Thanks.

        Regards,
        Tom

          Hello tomghuang,

You have several Ethernet PHY options like LAN8710, KSZ9031, AR8035 etc to choose from based on your requirements. Irrespective of which one you choose, you will have to make suitable Device Tree modifications to incorporate 2 Ethernet PHYs using the pre-built image. Our app note on Linux Device Trees (https://octavosystems.com/app_notes/osd335x-design-tutorial/osd335x-lesson-2-minimal-linux-boot/linux-device-tree/) should help you get started with the Device Tree.

Yes, you can add one more AR8035 PHY to the OSD3358-SM-RED image. We have not published any 2 Ethernet PHY reference designs for OSD335x yet. However, you can refer the AM335x Starter Kit board design files which uses 2 Ethernet PHYs (http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/AM335x_StarterKit_Board_Design_Files). Since OSD335x uses the same AM335x processor, AM335x Starter Kit design should help you easily incorporate 2 Ethernet PHYs to your design.

            Hi Eshtaartha,

Thank you so much for pointing out the direction of designing a dual-Ethernet board, especially the reference design from AM335x Starter Kit. Now we know how to proceed.

            Best regards,
            Tom
